OBXFS class of 2022

Hi everyone! I am Quinn Brewer, and I am majoring in Environmental Studies on the Sustainability Track. I will be graduating from UNC after my semester here in the Outer Banks. I am from Ridgefield, CT and grew up spending a lot of my time outside. My favorite things to do are ski, hike, and sit outside doing nothing for hours. I absolutely love to travel and live in new places to meet people from all over. I am excited to live in a new part of North Carolina that I have not been to since I was 10!

Hi! My name is Julia Elliott, and I’m a rising senior at UNC. I’m majoring in Political Science with minors in Sustainability Studies and Environmental Science & Studies. I was born in a small town called Gouda, and grew up between The Netherlands, Belgium and US! I’m super interested in environmental law and conservation, and am stoked

to learn more about the Outer Banks and apply what we learn in a hands-on setting. I love to read, run, travel, and spend time outside. I can’t wait to meet everyone to learn and grow together on the beach!

Hello! My name is Kayla Emerson and I am from Cornelius, NC. I’m majoring in Environmental Science and Geography with a minor in Food Studies. I’ll be a senior this fall and am excited to spend it in the Outer Banks learning about coastal issues and ecology! In my free time I like to run, hike, lay out in the sun, and cook. I’ve loved E3P at UNC and the OBX Field Site is a great opportunity for me to expand my studies and get out into the field. Upon graduating I hope to find a career where I can solve environmental issues with development in urban areas. I hope to learn a lot this fall and meet some great people along the way!

Hi everyone! I’m Jared Henry, and I’m pursuing an Environmental Studies major and an African Studies minor. I don’t fully know what I want to do after undergrad, but I’d maybe like to get a Master’s in Public Administration. Hopefully, this program will help narrow things down. I was born in Indiana, but I’ve spent most of my life in and around the Charlotte area. Growing up, my family went to the beach or up to Michigan every summer and we went hiking and mountain biking constantly. I still love to do those things as well as cooking/baking, gardening, playing board games, and being a little nerdy whenever I find the time to. Also, I enjoy playing volleyball and ultimate frisbee, and I’ll definitely bring both with me. I’m open to everything though as long as I’m in good company. I can’t wait to meet you all. and I hope we have a great semester together!

Hello everyone! My name is Tara Hinton, and I am a rising sophomore (class of ’25) majoring in Environmental Studies with a minor in Medicine, Literature, and Culture. I am from Sylva, NC, a small mountain town just west of Asheville. I am interested in the sensory biology of sea turtles, restoration ecology, and climate change studies — but I am also an ardent lover of the humanities, including narrative medicine and environmental anthropology. In my free time, I especially enjoy painting, playing piano, writing, and taking long night walks on the beach (the best turtle-watching time)! In short, I am beyond excited to be joining the 2022 OBXFS cohort, and I cannot wait to meet and learn alongside my peers.

Hello, my name is Josh Hyman and I am a rising Junior majoring in Environmental Science with minors in Chemistry and Public Policy. I am from Asheville and love the mountains dearly. I enjoy hiking, rock climbing, exploring new places, and meeting new people. Due to the distinct lack of rock climbing on the coast… I am hoping to learn how to surf during our semester at the OBX field site. I intend for my career to be focused around the social and institutional change necessary to address climate change and improve community life. I am excited for this semester and look forward to meeting y’all!

Hey! My name is Leanna Mahle, and I am a senior majoring in Environmental Studies & Public Policy and minoring in Spanish for the Professions. I am from Charlotte, NC and I’m interested in environmental law and brownfields but look forward to learning more. I love finding all the hidden walking trails in and around an area, learning new recipes, and bookbinding. I look forward to spending the semester out at the coast! See y’all there!

Hey! My name is Sophie Nichols, and I a junior majoring in Environmental Science and minoring in geographic information science, passionate about environmental restoration and urban planning. I grew up in Bethesda, Maryland (outside of Washington D.C.), but I’ve visited the outer banks several times. In my free time, I play water polo, watch studio Ghibli movies, and hike. I’m most excited to return to the outer banks and explore the marshes, maritime forests, and dunes.

Hi! My name is Anya, and I am a Junior from Jacksonville, Fl. I am majoring in Environmental Science with minors in Chemistry and Food Studies at UNC. I’ve lived near the beach most of my life, so it is one of my favorite places to be! I also love hiking and camping, cooking, and reading. This semester is my first time visiting the Outer Banks, and I cannot wait to meet everyone and make it my home for the next few months.

Hello! My name is Anna Smith, and I will be a senior this upcoming fall. I am majoring in Environmental Studies and potentially will be minoring in German. I am from Atlanta, GA but despite growing up in the city I have always loved the outdoors. In my free time, I love to travel, cook, and anything related to sports. I’m always down for any adventure so I can’t wait for our semester at the Outer Banks!

Hi! My name is Emmy Trivette and I’m a third-year Environmental Studies major and Journalism minor at UNC-CH. I grew up in Kitty Hawk and have spent the last three summers as a lifeguard for the Outer Banks’ beaches. The field of Science Communication will be critical to the preservation of coastal communities in the next century, so I look forward to furthering my biological knowledge starting with my hometown environment. When I’m not working, I’m probably playing the violin or reading outside.
